The ALA Annual Conference is almost upon us and this year it is being held right in our backyard. If you are joining us in Washington, DC next week make sure that the Washington Convention Center isn’t the only sight you see while you’re in town. Here are a few of my favorite places to visit in DC.
The Smithsonian museums are a must see. Lined up together around the National Mall (and free to boot), it is easy to hit up several in one visit. The DDC number for Smithsonian museums is 069.09753. To build this number, start with 069 Museology (Museum science). Add T1—09 History, geographic treatment, biography followed by T2—753 District of Columbia (Washington).
While downtown, be sure to check out my two favorite museums, The National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Renwick Gallery. To learn more about the contents of the NMAAHC, check out the DDC number 973.0496073 African Americans. To build this number start with 973.04 Ethnic groups in the United States + T5—96073. For sources about the Renwick and contemporary American art, look at 709.730904 American Art, 1900-1999, built using 709 History of arts + T2—73 United States + T1—0904 20th century, 1900-1999.
If museums aren’t your thing, this town still has plenty to offer. Head over to the United States Capitol to see one of DC’s most iconic buildings. Items about the Capitol and the legislative process that takes place within are classed at 328.73 (328 The legislative process + T2—73 United States).
While you’re visiting the Capitol, you might as well cross the street and visit the home of the Dewey team, the Library of Congress. The DDC number for LC is 027.573 (027.5 Government libraries + T2—73 United States). Members of the Dewey editorial team will be present during the Library’s ALA open houses in the Jefferson building on Saturday, June 22nd 5-8 pm and Monday, June 24th 10 am-2 pm. Stop by and say hello!
