What kinds of maps are classed in 912 Maps and plans of surface of earth and of extraterrestrial worlds? The new caption at 912, with "graphic presentations" changed to "maps and plans," is intended to make clear that the number is limited to maps and plans. We have provided new and modified notes to clarify further:
Class here atlases, charts; road maps, cycling maps, pedestrian maps, hiking maps
For maps and plans of a specific subject other than geography and travel, see the subject, plus notation T1—0223 from Table 1, e.g., maps of routes of bicycle racing 796.620223, cross-country ski trails 796.9320223, maps of military operations of American Revolution 973.330223
For maps and plans associated with a type of vehicle other than motor land vehicles and cycles, see the type, plus notation T1—0223 from Table 1, e.g., railroad atlases 385.0223
Here are examples of maps that are classed in 912 plus notation 3-9 from Table 2. Geographic Areas, Historical Periods, Biography, as instructed at 912.3-912.9 Specific continents, countries, localities; extraterrestrial worlds:
Road map. 2, Normandie 912.4421 (912 plus T2—4421 Normandy [Normandie])
Eastern cycle map: Your introduction to cycling in Auckland 912.932 (912 plus T2—932 Auckland Region)
A map of Berkeley's pathways 912.79467 (912 plus T2—79467 Berkeley)
Ice Age Trail atlas: 105 detailed color hiking maps to help you connect with the thousand-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail 912.775 (912 plus T2—775 Wisconsin)
At places other than 912 where classifiers might mistakenly think that "road maps, cycling maps, pedestrian maps, hiking maps" should be classed, numbers built with Standard Subdivisions notation T1—0223 are given with a do-not-use note pointing to 912. For example, under 796.51 Walking, we have given the entry:
796.510223 Diagrams
Do not use for maps and plans; class in 912
Treatment of maps that don’t belong at 912 remains unchanged. As the scatter see references at 912 indicate, notation T1—0223 Maps, plans, diagrams can be added for maps that don’t belong in 912. For example, T1—0223 can be added to 385 Railroad transportation to build 385.0223 for Railway maps of the world.
Also unchanged is the preference order in Table 1 Standard subdivisions that affects classification of maps of specific areas. In the table of preference at the start of Table 1, both T1—093-T1—099 Specific continents, countries, localities; extraterrestrial worlds and T1—091 Areas, regions, places in general appear above T1—022 Illustrations, models, miniatures. These entries in the table of preference have hierarchical force, applying to all their subdivisions. Hence railroad maps limited to specific continents, countries, localities are classed in 385.093-.099, not 385.0223. In the add table under T1—093-T1—099 Specific continents, countries, localities; extraterrestrial worlds is notation that can be added at the end to indicate maps:
022 Illustrations
Including cartoons, drawings, pictures, pictorial charts and designs, sketches; graphs; maps, plans, diagrams
Hence Rail atlas Great Britain and Ireland is classed in 385.0941022 (385 plus T2—41 British Isles as instructed at T1—093-T1—099 plus 022 as instructed at T1—093-T1—099).
