Subscribers to the English-language version of WebDewey will notice some changes on Monday morning (if you can't wait, you can look right now!). We’ve installed several new features plus links to external content to make it easier for users of Abridged Edition 15 to use WebDewey.
Some key new features include:
- Segmentation marks (/) are now displayed for numbers in the downward hierarchy in the Hierarchy display
- Segmentation marks are now displayed in individual numbers associated with Relative Index entries and mapped terminology in the Browse view
- Segmentation marks and instructions have been added to the records for optional numbers
In order to use the new features, it is important to make sure you have "Show" checked under Segmentation Options on the Preferences page.
In addition, we have added links from the footer on each page to external content associated with Abridged Edition 15. The content includes the PDFs for the schedules, tables, Manual, Introduction, Glossary, and Relocations & Discontinuations from the print version of Abridged Edition 15. The PDFs of the schedules and tables will assist abridged-edition users in places where the segmentation marks and instructions in the DDC 23 content may be confusing. Since there is no convenient way to indicate abridgment of content in the DDC 23 Manual, we have also included a link to the Abridged Edition 15 Manual. One caveat: the PDFs contain static content, and will not be updated as changes to DDC 23 are introduced. For additional background information on the abridged view of DDC 23 data in WebDewey, see Libbie Crawford’s presentation from June 2012. For general information on Abridged Edition 15, see the February 2012 webinar on the abridged edition.
We are anxious to hear from abridged-edition users on the usability of the new features and linked content in WebDewey. We are also interested in hearing from full-edition users on how they might make use of the new features. For example, full-edition users could take advantage of the segmentation marks and instructions to produce abridged numbers for physical shelf arrangement. Let us know!
