As mentioned in a previous posting, “DDC 23 contains a new type of note in class records for standard subdivisions that introduce special expansions not found in Table 1: ‘Notation X from Table 1 as modified below.’" One place where such a note exists is 796.33206 (American football) Organizations, facilities, management, with its note, “Notation 06 from Table 1 as modified below.” The modification uses 796.332068 for Grounds and their layout, displacing the usual meaning of T1—068 Management to 796.332069 Management. A modified form of this type of note is found under other sports. For example, at 796.32301-796.32309 (Basketball) Standard subdivisions, we find “Notation from Table 1 as modified under 796.3320202–796.332077, e.g., basketball courts 796.323068.”
What’s the connection to the Olympics? Two aspects strike me as being of interest. First, there’s the venue in which the basketball games are being played, the Olympic Park Basketball Arena; I was fascinated by a report that it has been designed to be deconstructed and recycled (a little T1—0286 Green technology going on there). But wait—the Basketball Arena is not the only place where Olympic basketball games will be played. There’s also the North Greenwich Arena, known before and after the games as the O2 Arena. The initial group phase for both men and women is being played in the Basketball Arena; the women’s quarterfinal games will also be played there. The men’s quarterfinal games, and both men’s and women’s semifinal and final games will be played in the larger North Greenwich Arena.
The second aspect of interest is that the layout of the court differs somewhat from the layout used in the NBA (National Basketball Association). Specifically, under FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball) rules, the three-point line is not as far away from the basket as in the NBA and the lane is defined as a trapezoid, not as a rectangle. Major differences between FIBA rules and various North American rule sets are outlined here. Official rules for basketball are classed in 796.32302022, following the same note under 796.32301-796.32309 (Basketball) Standard subdivisions referred to above, which leads to 796.33202022 (American football) Official rules.
And if you want the official Olympic spectator guide for basketball, you’ll find it classed at 796.32302024, again following the note under 796.32301-796.32309 (Basketball) Standard subdivisions referred to above, which leads to 796.33202024 (American football) Spectators’ guides.
