Earlier today at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim, the MARBI (Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information) Committee approved option 2 (with minor modifications) in MARC Proposal No. 2012-03, Data Provenance in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format. Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, the Library of Congress, and OCLC jointly developed the proposal; Michael Panzer presented it to MARBI and fielded questions on behalf of the three institutions. The minor modifications, all welcome by those of us who worked on the proposal, include:
- Limit the content of subfield $u (Process used to generate linked field) to machine-actionable information, e.g., URIs
- Specify non–machine-actionable descriptions of processes used to generate linked fields in a new subfield $a
- Change the label of the subfield for “Confidence value” from $1 to $c
- Add the provisions of modified option 2 to accommodate data provenance in the MARC 21 Authority and Classification formats
