“U.S. Says BP Well Is Finally ‘Dead’” (New York Times), “BP Finally Seals Leaking Gulf of Mexico Oil Well” (BBC), and “BP’s Disastrous Broken Well in Gulf of Mexico is ‘Dead’” (AFP)—with the well sealed, the number of news stories with details about engineering of deepwater oil wells and photographs with labels like “the damaged blow out preventer along with the Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) cap from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig” (AFP) may abate. See “Timeline: BP Oil Spill” (BBC) for a summary.
In a previous blog we spoke about the oil spill aspects of the “BP Deepwater Horizon Explosion and Oil Spill, 2010,” as LCSH calls it. We did not discuss also the safety aspects, because we had recently discussed mine safety in another blog, and the DDC numbers are similar. We plan to revisit the topic of safety in a future blog. For now, let’s look at some oil well engineering numbers other than 622.8 Mine health and safety. All the engineering entries discussed below have the footnote: “Do not use notation T1—0289 from Table 1 for safety measures; class in 622.8.”
The entry 622.338 Oil, oil shales, tar sands, natural gas has this note:
Use 622.338 for extraction of petroleum in the broad sense covering oil and gas, 622.3382 for petroleum in the narrow sense limited to oil
The entry 622.3381 Drilling techniques has the subdivision 622.33819 Offshore drilling, which has these notes:
Class here comprehensive works on offshore petroleum extraction
For a specific aspect of offshore petroleum extraction, see the aspect, e.g., offshore enhanced oil recovery 622.3382
The entry 622.3382 Oil has these notes:
Including well blowouts
Class here reservoir engineering; enhanced, secondary, tertiary recovery; well flooding
Class techniques of drilling for oil in 622.3381
An example of a work classed in 622.33819 Offshore drilling is Fundamentals of Marine Riser Mechanics: Basic Principles and Simplified Analyses; it has the first LCSH “Offshore oil well drilling.” It is not classed in 622.3382 Oil because of the class-elsewhere note at 622.3382: “Class techniques of drilling for oil in 622.3381.”
Works that emphasize oil well blowouts and blowout prevention in all kinds of oil wells—on land and offshore—are classed in 622.3382 Oil, e.g., Blowout and Well Control Handbook, which has the first LCSH “Oil wells—Blowouts—Prevention.”
Works that emphasize oil well blowouts and blowout prevention are also classed in 622.3382 Oil if limited to offshore wells. An example is Marine Riser Systems and Subsea Blowout Preventers, which has the first LCSH “Oil wells—Blowouts—Prevention.” It is not classed in 622.33819 Offshore drilling because of the scatter note at 622.33819 (“For a specific aspect of offshore petroleum extraction, see the aspect, e.g., offshore enhanced oil recovery 622.3382”) and because of the including note at 622.3382 (“Including well blowouts”).
