Radiocarbon dating was important, but it was also the presence of a stone mace-head that indicated to researchers that those buried there were probably rulers.

Whatever the real purpose of Stonehenge, it remains one of the finest sites in the English Heritage inventory. A first visit there , leaves one in awe of the skills and determination needed to create this circle with the resources available at the time.
