The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, Inc., recently gave Nebula Awards® for works in the science fiction or fantasy genres:
Novel: Joe Haldeman for Camouflage
Novella: Kelly Link for "Magic for Beginners"
Novelette: Kelly Link for "The Faery Handbag"
Short Story: Carol Emshwiller for "I Live With You"
Script: Joss Whedon for Serenity
The works by Haldeman and Emshwiller are classed in 813.54 American fiction—1945–1999. The novella “Magic for Beginners” (available in the single-author collection Magic for Beginners) is classed in 813.6 American fiction—2000–. (Incidentally, this novella is the answer to an earlier query from Winton.) Neither of these Dewey numbers expresses the genre of the works. Genre is expressed in literature only for collections or discussions of works by multiple authors; for example, if the first four works were published together in an anthology, the number would be 813.087608 Collection of American science and fantasy fiction in English.
Link’s novelette “The Faery Handbag” was first published in a collection by multiple authors, The Faery Reel: Tales from the Twilight Realm. The novelette is also available in the single-author collection Magic for Beginners (classed in 813.6).
The script for the film Serenity is classed with the film in 791.4372 Single films. For films, genre is expressed only for discussions of special aspects of films, e.g., 791.43615 Science fiction and fantasy films.
The number for the awards, 823.087607973 Nebula Award, is built with 823.0876 Science and fantasy fiction in English, plus the Table 1 notation for awards issued in the United States (T1—07973). The awards are not limited to American writers and indeed have gone to English and Australian writers; hence the number for the award is based on the comprehensive number for fiction in English (823).
Great post! Sci-fi is a personal favorite.
