On the first day of each month, we post on OCLC's Dewey web site (here) a list of entries that have recently been changed or added to DDC 22 and Abridged Edition 14. This month's list of "New and changed entries" (posted on December 1) is devoted to the updates that we have just made to Table 3C. Additional Notation for Arts and Literature, specifically in T3C—3 Arts and literature dealing with specific themes and subjects. The numbers in T3C—3 are those that may be added to express the themes and subjects of the artistic and literary works discussed in the works being cataloged: a work about the ways in which education has been represented in dramatic films, for instance, would be classed at 791.436557, where 791.436 is the base number for works about Films dealing with specific themes and subjects, and 557 is notation added from T3C—3557 Education as a result of the instruction at 791.4362–.4369 to "Add to base number 791.436 the numbers following —3 in notation 32–39 from Table 3C ..." (Documentary films about a specific theme or subject are classed with the subject, e.g., education 370.) Two of the main updates that we have made to T3C—3 are to move —352 Specific kinds of persons from the last entry to the second entry in the table of preference under T3C—35 Humanity -- so that it is clear that a work on the theme of women, for example, is to be classed with Specific kinds of persons at —3522 rather than with Sociology and anthropology at —3552 -- and to provide for works on themes to do with language (at T3C—34) and computer science and information (at T3C—39).
