To conclude Veterans Awareness Week in the UK, the 60th anniversary of the end of the World War II was commemorated yesterday (July 10, 2005) -- a date selected for falling between May 8 (Victory in Europe day) and August 14 (Victory in Japan day). In memory of the 50 million lives that were lost in the war, a Lancaster bomber dropped a million poppy petals over the crowds gathered along London's Mall. In the DDC, works about the war are classed in History of Europe, at 940.53 World War II, 1939-1945, and 940.54 Military history of World War II. At 940.546 Celebrations, commemorations, memorials, a "see" reference is given: "For celebrations, commemorations, memorials of a specific event, see the event, e.g., Normandy Invasion 940.5421421." Because the war ended at different times in different places, however, the end of the war is not treated by the DDC as a specific event, and so any work on the 60th anniversary would be classed at 940.546.
