After EPC Meeting 139 had concluded, one of our major editorial projects for the summer was to bring our mappings of BISAC headings to the DDC up to level of the 2015 edition of BISAC. The updated mappings are now available in WebDewey. For example, at 641.862 (Cooking) Frozen desserts, we now find the BISAC mapping, COOKING—Courses & Dishes—Ice Cream, Ices, etc.:
If we click the BISAC heading, we are taken to its record:
From the 008 field we find that the heading dates back only to 20151001 (i.e., October 1, 2015), the date associated with BISAC headings that were new as of the 2015 edition. Its subject code is CKB122000. We also see that this BISAC heading has been mapped to two Dewey numbers, both 641.862 Frozen desserts, which covers the ice cream part of the heading, and 641.863 Ices, sherbet, sorbet, which covers the ices part of the heading. (If a work to which the BISAC heading COOKING—Courses & Dishes—Ice Cream, Ices, etc. has been assigned covers both ice cream and ices, the work would be classed in 641.862, given that 641.863 is in the structural hierarchy of 641.862 [as reflected in the see reference from 641.862 to 641.863].)
We also find a 680 note that may seem a little odd: why are we talking about low-salt Chinese seafood cooking in the context of a heading for ice cream and ices? In fact, the same note is found in the records for all BISAC headings with the major heading COOKING. Although how to class a work on low-salt Chinese seafood cooking may not be directly relevant to how to class a work on ice cream and/or ices, we see the general pattern that with COOKING, multiple subject headings may need to be applied.
Of the 3,693 BISAC headings now mapped to DDC 23 numbers, 2,648 were also mapped to DDC 22 numbers. But 1,045 of them have mappings to DDC 23 numbers and not to DDC 22 numbers. Another 244 headings were previously mapped to DDC 22 numbers, where the BISAC heading has now been inactivated.
One of the biggest changes in the BISAC subject headings list, 2015 edition, was the addition of a set of YOUNG ADULT FICTION and YOUNG ADULT NONFICTION headings. Many of these headings correspond with headings from a similar list of JUVENILE FICTION and JUVENILE NONFICTION headings, but the two lists are not fully parallel. If we browse for JUVENILE FICTION among BISAC headings in WebDewey, we find no matches, but see numerous mappings from JUVENILE NONFICTION headings:
We provided no mappings to Dewey numbers for JUVENILE FICTION and YOUNG ADULT FICTION headings, because they don’t specify language, which heads the citation order for Dewey literature numbers. We have, however, provided (as appropriate, parallel) mappings for JUVENILE NONFICTION and YOUNG ADULT NONFICTION headings, because target audience is largely not relevant in Dewey, and the mappings take into account only the subjects named.
The 2016 edition of the BISAC Subject Headings List is newly available. We anticipate being able to update our mappings to reflect the 2016 edition within the next few months.
