Last week, in the midst of putting the final touches on the print version of DDC 23, we received the sad news that EPC member David Farris (Library and Archives Canada) had passed away suddenly on February 15. David had been a member of EPC since 2008. Among David’s direct contributions to the upcoming new edition of the DDC are the updates to political parties of Canada and the geographic table for Canada, plus the recasting of the Canadian period table for American literature in English as an optional development. We say “direct contributions” because in looking back over the minutes of the EPC meetings that David attended, we are struck by what an active participant he was at each meeting. David commented carefully on every proposed update, and his wit and wisdom enlivened our in-person and electronic EPC meetings. David also coordinated LAC’s input into the design of WebDewey 2.0.
The Dewey editors have enjoyed a long working relationship with David that predated his membership on EPC. In his role as editor of Canadian Subject Headings (CSH), we often exchanged correspondence on the treatment of various topics in the DDC. David worked directly with us on the revised and expanded area table for Quebec published in DDC 22. We also worked together on a prototype CSH-DDC mapping.
We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We will miss David.
